January started off with a bang as we released 205 tarpon up to 125 pounds in weight aboard the Extremist. Our best trip was on January 9th when we released 22 tarpon out of 40+ bites on a 4 hour trip!!! The biggest one of the lot was caught by Mitch Davenport on Janaury 17th and it was estimated by Capt. Juan at around 125 pounds!!! The first week of February has been on fire as well and we have released 6 tarpon over 80 pounds in weight, the biggest a solid 110 pounds! Come 'on down for the best tarpon fishing in the World! Tight lines, Capt. Juan.
2013 was a great year for Extreme Fishing Puerto Rico and we were a little sad to see it end. We released a total of 833 tarpon up to 130 pounds this past season and had many wonderful customers who were very happy! I personally want to thank my great sponsors who give us the opportunity to have some great gear: St. Croix rods, Shimano, Pure Fishing, Maui Jim and Mojo. We appreciate everything that you do for Extreme Fishing and we hope to keep making you guys proud! 2014 has started off hot with 96 tarpon releases in 12 calendar days so come 'on down for the best tarpon fishing in the World!!! Tight lines, Capt. Juan.
We ran quite a few trips in November, both inshore and offshore. The inshore bite was a little tough this month due to heavy rains and bad water in the lagoons but we still released 29 Tarpon up to 75 pounds in weight. We also caught some nice Jack Crevalle, Snook, Blue runners, Ladyfish, Cero mackerel, Grey snapper and Barracuda. Highlights of the month were watching a 78 year old kick a 65 pound tarpon off of his bucket list and watching a 9 year old catch 8 tarpon in one morning! Offshore we fished six half days and caught 2 Blue Marlin, 2 White Marlin and 4 Sailfish aboard Extremist. Capt. Juan even got to catch & release a 280 pound Blue Marlin on 20 pound test line!!! There was a two week stretch were the ocean was flat calm and we had a great billfish bite! The cold fronts are rolling in just as I am writing this post and the tarpon action should be great in the backcountry lagoons in December. Offshore Dorado (Mahi-Mahi) and Wahoo should invade our waters in great numbers. Tight lines, Capt. Juan.
The big tarpon invaded Torrecilla and San Jose lagoons once again in October and we caught some very big silver kings. Capt. David had a great day on October 22nd when he caught a 120 pound tarpon in the morning and also caught another 120 pounder in the afternoon!!! Our best trip of the month was on October 1st when Capt. Juan guided Chester to 9 tarpon releases out of 20+ bites!!! My good friend Tony and his lovely wife Neti came back to PR once again and had some great fishing. Tony caught tarpon up to 75 pounds using artificial lures and Neti caught her personal best tarpon with a nice 80 pounder!!! Did manage to get in one day of vertical jigging with Capt. David and we caught 7 blackfin tuna, one almaco jack and one caribbean reef shark. November looks good with more solid tarpon action in the lagoons and offshore we should see increasing numbers of sailfish, dorado and wahoo. Tight lines, Capt. Juan.
Fished the 60th Club Nautico de San Juan International Billfish Tournament from September 17th to the 21st. The fleet of 46 boats released an incredible 145 blue marlin in 4 days of fishing. I was one of the anglers aboard the 40 foot Cabo “Wheezing” as one of our anglers bailed out at the last minute! We started off strong going 2 out of 3 the first day and 2 out of 4 the second day. That put us in the lead with four blue marlin releases on 30 pound test line and we won the second day calcutta as well!!! The last two days we were snake bit and went a combined 0 for 6. Had some bad luck there at the end bit we still ended up in 10th place. It was great to catch a couple of these magnificent fish myself and here’s a great picture of Capt. Juan hard at work! Tight lines always!!!
August was a very hot month here in Puerto Rico but we still managed to run quite a few charters. Our best trip in terms of numbers was a morning outing on August 1st where we caught 9 baby tarpon out of 20+ bites. Night time fishing was very productive with the hot weather and both Capt. Juan & Capt. David caught fish up to 75 pounds during the new & full moon periods. Our best night trip was August 21st when we caught 5 tarpon out of 8 bites plus one nice Jack Crevalle. During a 4 day stretch in mid August I ran the 40ft Cabo WHEEZING to the North Drop in St. Thomas. We fished 3 days there going 2/6 on Blue Marlin. The last day we fished our way back to Puerto Rico and caught a Sailfish and a 42 pound Wahoo. Lots of tarpon should start rolling around San Jose Lagoon this month and we will also be fishing the 60th IBT in Club Nautico de San Juan so I will keep you guys informed! Tight lines, Capt. Juan.
July was very hot and humid but the tarpon fishing remained steady throughout the month. We released 70 tarpon aboard Extremist, inlcuding two nice ones between 110 and 115 pounds! The highlight of the month was fishing with 13 year old Danny and his Aunt Jill. They fished 3 trips with me and we had a blast! The first day Danny was 2 for 6 on tarpon, catching a nice 110 pound fish on 20 pound line!!! He also caught 3 snook that morning. The second trip was an afternoon deal and Danny was 1 for 5 on tarpon, caught a nice Jack Crevalle, one Cero Mackerel, and caught at least 10 mangrove snappers. The third trip we left early in the morning towards La Torrecilla Lagoon. Danny was 5 for 8 on tarpon up to 30 pounds, released three snook and three small bonefish for a Triple Inshore Grand Slam aboard Extremist!!! Awesome three trips with some awesome customers!!! The biggest tarpon of the month was caught by Chris and it was a healthy 115 pounder!!! He was 5 for 7 on tarpon on his trip!!! August is looking good so come 'on down!!! Tight lines, Capt. Juan.
